I watched Victoria’s sun-kissed face as her head leaned on a plush pillow facing the shaded airplane window. She had been asleep for a few hours while I fought unsuccessfully with my eyelids to even remotely close shut. Eventually, I gave up, and that’s when I found solace in the view before me.

The purity of Victoria’s heart and the ambition with which she moved through her life had ignited a fire within me that I couldn’t quite understand. In all my years of marriage, followed by periods of cheating and eventually my playboy era, I hadn’t met anyone for whom I wanted to care so genuinely and unconditionally.

Making sure that she was still asleep, I opened the lid of my laptop and typed the name of a horse farm in Newmarket, England. I had already spoken to Henry Singleton, my attorney’s close friend, and ensured they had one of their best horses ready for a test ride when we arrived. They had also sent me a sales contract which I planned on filling out in advance in case she fell in love with the horse.

Just as I started typing, the pilot’s voice sounded over the intercom, jolting Victoria up from her comfortable seat and forcing me to slam the lid of my laptop shut before she caught me.

“Are you working?” She questioned me with astonishment as she stretched her back.

“Just finishing up some boring tasks,” I smiled uneasily and shoved the computer away. “Glad you got some sleep, but you left me here bored and alone.”

“Oh, I’m sorry,” she mocked me. “This comfortable seat is to blame.”

We sat up and waited for the descent while she gazed at the unfamiliar scenery out the window.

“My first time in England,” she beamed and turned her face to me. “Thank you for this trip.”

“My pleasure entirely,” I smirked, drowning in the joy exuding from her eyes.

With the hustle and bustle of Heathrow Airport behind us, we witnessed London waking up and going on with their lives through the limo windows. Victoria had entirely forgotten about my existence, taking in every sight and scent as she rolled down her window, allowing the gentle wind to play with her hair.

“Well, I guess I’ve lost you to London,” I poked her ribs, jolting her from a daze.

“You know that feeling,” she said pensively. “When you feel like you’ve been someplace before. Like you belong there?”

“Is this it for you? London?” I looked at her, surprised. “And you haven’t even seen the half yet.”

She didn’t respond. She just kept staring out the window.

I let her revel in her newfound feeling for the rest of the ride and quietly informed her that we had arrived at the Goring Hotel.

I observed her closely as she stepped out of the limo and patted her white buttoned-up shirt, hoping to iron out the creases. Her hair flowed freely down her back, and her eyes shone with excitement.

We walked through the majestic doors of the hotel, exposing an exquisite gold-themed interior and the aroma of old English excellence.
